Bishop Wordsworth School

Value: £4.2 million

Client: Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education

Bishop Wordsworth School is a voluntary aided grammar school for boys enjoying a hard earned reputation as one of the finest establishments in the country. As part of an expansion of its 6th form facilities they commissioned a new eight classroom teaching block. To minimise disruption to the school year the works were programmed to be completed over a 12 week period between the end of year exams in June and the start of the new term in September.

To meet the strict time frames, G&H proposed a modular steel framed building system that could be manufactured off site and simply placed in situ, thus reducing working time on site.

The old Portakabin style teaching block was demolished at the end of June. Over one weekend 24, 40 sq. metre modules were craned over a Grade I listed perimeter wall directly into position, utilising a 100 tonne crane.

After the modules were stabilised and the services were connected, the interiors were fitted out ready for equipment and furniture to be installed in time for the new autumn term, during which time the exterior finishing was also completed.

As well as delivering a brand new teaching block with no substantive disruption to the school year, G&H’s innovative modular solution also saved the school the cost of temporary accommodation that would have been required had a traditional build solution been undertaken.
