Sherborne School for Girls
Value: £1.8 million
Client: Sherborne School for Girls
Sherborne School for Girls is a highly regarded school with an ever increasing student roll. Conscious of the need to provide a top quality pastoral environment as well as academic success, the Governors decided to undertake a complete refurbishment of the girls boarding house, including areas which were, at that time, out of use.
Utilising its experience of working in the educational sector G&H were able to devise a programme so that essential works would be undertaken in holiday periods. As a result the school was able to continue its activities with minimum disruption.
The entire project was phased to allow partial use of the building whilst work was carried out on the other. The ground floor was opened up to create an open dining area, using a single 1.5 tonnes steel beam to support the three floors above. All the mechanical and electrical services were upgraded to current standards and new showers, kitchens and staff accommodation created and fitted out. Externally, 200 double height bespoke sash windows were made by G&H’s own specialist joinery and installed on-site.
Finally the entire roof was recovered, matching the original clay tiles.
This refurbishment was successfully completed on time and on budget creating an appealing modern boarding environment for pupils. As a result of the project, facilities were created for a further 50 boarders, enabling the school to continue to grow and expand.
