Marie Louise Nursing Home

Value: £4.6 million

Client: Daughters of Wisdom

The La Sagesse Convent was originally established in Romsey in 1894. Today, the Sisters work in collaboration with lay and other charitable organisations to provide care and support for the community. To further this mission, planning permission for a 48 bedroom nursing home on the convent site and a full refurbishment of the derelict Old School Building & Archives was applied for in 2000.

When planning was finally achieved a contractor was sought that had expertise in both the new build and the restoration phases of the project and which could carry out the works with minimal disruption to the daily work of the Sisters living at the convent.

G&H with its experience in the care sector and on major restoration projects on ‘live’ sites fitted the bill perfectly.

G&H was able to value engineer the project at an early stage to manage the cost to acceptable levels. The three-storey nursing home with stonework to the first floor and brick elevations above was built on a green field site within the grounds. Inside, the building incorporated an oratory and a special needs area. The refurbishment of the old school building involved the creation of a steel supporting frame within the existing structure, making safe the original mill stream race and bringing the building back to current building standards whilst retaining its visual appeal and Grade II listed status.

Marie Louise House, though owned by the Convent, is now being leased to and managed by The Hospital Management Trust, enabling the La Sagesse Convent to fulfill their mission of community led care, whilst deriving an income for the upkeep and running of the order.
