Annual growth slows
In figures released in March 2009, the volume of retail sales in February was 0.4 per cent higher than in February 2008, the lowest growth since September 1995, when it rose by 0.2 per cent.
Between January and February, total sales volume decreased by 1.9 per cent. All sectors showed falls, with the largest decrease in other stores, which fell by 4.8 per cent and is, along with January 1995, the largest fall in the series. Textile, clothing and footwear stores fell by 3.7 per cent.
